Cici's Jouney
When she was 11 months old, Cici suffered a severe anoxic brain injury following a choking incident which left her on a feeding tube, minimally responsive and severely disabled. Cici has had over 40 hyperbaric oxygen therapy treatments since that time and has shown some great progress. October 29, 2009 was the one year anniversary of Cici's accident. Click on Cici's picture below to see her journey to recovery.
When brain cells die or are damaged by traumatic brain injury (TBI), abilities controlled by that area of the brain are lost. These abilities include speech, movement and memory. How a TBI patient is affected depends on where the injury occurs in the brain and how much the brain is damaged.
Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy (HBOT) delivers oxygen enriched blood to areas of the brain affected by brain injury. These blood cells activate idling neurons, allowing them to take over the functions of the dead cells. This allows a patient to regain functions to parts of the body which have become compromised by the brain injury.
